YORKSHIRE TERRIER or "Yorkie"
Brief History of
the Breed
As
the appealing personality of these little dogs became known among the people
of England,
and the long coats began to be admired by the dog lovers of the era, they
were recognized as the " glamour " breed among
the terrier group. The dogs were originally bred for working, without much
thought for conformation, and all dedication was shown was to retain their
instinctive habits for the hunt; yet it was the
development of the two color, longer coat that endeared them to the
members of the royal courts, gave them desirability as lap dogs and ladies`
companions, and earned their unofficial title as glamour terriers.
It was in 1886 when the Kennel Club opened the register
to Yorkshire Terriers as an individual breed. By this time they had
been considerably reduced in size compared to the other terriers already
established in England, but fortunately had not lost any of their spirit,
stamina, or tenacity.
Whether the early Yorkshiremen merely tried to
perfect a spunky,long-coated
ratting dog, or whether in their ultimate knowledge and realization of the
dog`s intelligence and charm they had an inkling
of it`s future popularity as a companion and
lapdog, future generations were quick to realize the potential of the
Yorkshire Terrier. It was inevitable that it develop into the "
glamour terrier " we know today, and that it has retained all of its
delightful characteristics.

The Yorkshire Terrier- what can we say about him? First, he is the most
adorable charmer. He always gets his way, even as he pretends to bow to your
wishes. He is beautiful in his long full mantle of blue and gold silk, with
neatly placed top-knot; he is facinating, too, in a straggly-ragged uneven
coat. He`s delighted to strut in the Show ring and show off all his glory;
or to follow commands in the Obedience ring.
Your Yorkie is happy to share with you-your bed, or anything you eat. He`ll
gladly accompany you wherever you go or in whatever you do. He is, in fact,
the perfect companion for all occupations.
